Winston-Salem State University has announced that BB&T has given $125,000 to the Winston-Salem State University Foundation for academic scholarships for students. The gift will be used to create the Cynthia A. Williams Endowed Scholarship for undergraduates who have declared a major in biology, chemistry, computer science or mathematics. Williams, a second-term foundation board member, recently retired from BB&T’s executive management team. The gift is given in honor of her retirement, her tremendous contribution to BB&T’s success, and her passion for continuing education.

“I believe that if everyone received a great education the world would be a better place,” Williams said. “I am truly impressed with the progress that Winston-Salem State University has made with their retention, graduation and job-placement rates. I’m so honored to be part of BB&T’s continuing commitment to education and the establishment of a scholarship for students pursuing degrees in STEM fields.”

Michelle Cook, vice chancellor for university advancement and executive director of the foundation said: “It is especially gratifying when a board member supports the future we envision for our students. We are honored that Ms. Williams chose to make this investment in Winston-Salem State University and our students.”

Williams retired at the end of June as BB&T’s senior vice president and chief corporate communications officer. In addition to the foundation board, Williams has served on the boards of The Arts Council of Winston-Salem, N.C. Bankers Association, N.C. Black Repertory Company’s National Black Theatre Festival, Northwest Piedmont Workforce Development and The Piedmont Club.
